Through the Friends of the McCallum Fine Arts Academy local arts patrons, Patrick and Lorelei McDevitt, have donated a $3,000 German made cello to the McCallum Orchestra. Last week, Cari Clark who is the Chair of the Friends of the Academy, informed Orchestra Director Ricky Pringle about the donation and he was very pleased. The McDevitts have requested that a deserving student at McCallum be given the cello to use as their own instrument while they are a student at McCallum.

The McDevitts will received a tax receipt for their in-kind donation. If you are interested in donating an instrument to the McCallum Fine Arts Academy or to the Lamar Middle School Fine Arts Academy. Please contact Cari Clark at: cariclarkhomes@austin.rr.com

Please mark your calendars!

The McCallum Theatre Department will present its 7th annual benefit fashion show on Saturday, January 21st, 7:00pm at the McCallum Arts Center Theatre. This year’s show will be the first to take place in the new venue. The show’s title, “ICON: Austin” challenges student designers to create a line of clothing with a focus on persons, places or things iconic to Austin. Austin’s SIMS Foundation has been chosen as the beneficiary of the fashion show. According to the student directors, ”SIMS is a local organization that provides programs to professional musicians, an industry so close to the McCallum community.”

Student tickets are $6, adult tickets are $15, and VIP tickets are $30 (includes a pre-show reception with food and drinks, plus preferred seating along the catwalk, paparazzi photos, and swag bags). Because the show regularly sells out, it is highly recommended to buy tickets in advance at www.mactheatre.com. 100% of VIP ticket sales will be donated to the SIMS Foundation.

In May, McCallum students unveiled their first “Bubble,” a circular outdoor bench with interactive lights designed to provide seating – and a striking conversation piece – in the school’s courtyard. Resembling a soap bubble when viewed from above, the project was the tangible result of “Teach Design Austin, ” a program developed by frog Design, a global innovation firm, to give high school students real-world design experience through an immersive process. Members of the frog team worked closely with students over the school year from the initial brainstorming period through design, fundraising, management and construction. The first Bubble was completed in the spring of 2011 and a second Bubble, located near the new McCallum Arts Center, is now under construction thanks to a gift from the McCallum Class of 1959. The McCallum community extends its appreciation to the entire frog team, as well as to Flintco for its invaluable assistance in the construction phase of this functional and creative design project.

On December 11, 2010, Austin Artist Roi James held a benefit fundraiser in his studio to raise funds for the Visual Arts Programs at the McCallum Fine Arts Academy and also for KIVA.org, a micro-financing organization for third-world entrepreneurship.

A range of James’ works were displayed that evening, from neoclassic figurative and landscape oil paintings to more recent abstract works. The pieces encompassed 15 years of the artist’s career. James reduced prices on the works up to 50% to encourage purchases for the causes. By the end of the night, $15,500 had been raised—with $11,500 earmarked for the McCallum Fine Arts Academy’s visual arts programs and $4000 for KIVA.org. James was elated with the results, knowing that the gift would make a meaningful impact on the programs.

On January 13, 2011, Roi James presented a check to the McCallum Fine Arts Academy faculty and students. The visual arts students expressed their immense gratitude with a large, signed thank-you card. Today it hangs in James’ studio as a source of inspiration.

Says James, “In the McCallum Fine Arts Academy, I see a place that is nurturing creativity in young people. These artists will experience that gift and share it with the world. I am grateful that McCallum promotes creativity in such a very strong way, and I want to send a big “Yes” out in response to its efforts.”

The Creative Classroom is a groundbreaking collaboration among Austin ISD, mindPOP, institutions of higher education, and arts and cultural organizations, working together to ensure that every Austin student gains the benefits of attending an arts-rich school. The initiative is grounded in research demonstrating that students attending arts-rich schools experience improved academic achievement, social behaviors and college attainment, regardless of economic status. Using the schools of the McCallum High School vertical team, the Creative Classroom initiative will develop a demonstration model for “arts-rich schools” at the high school, middle school and elementary School levels, focusing on successful elements that may be replicated across the district.

Work began in the summer of 2011, facilitated by Dr. Brent Hasty and mindPOP, to produce campus level action plans for the Creative Classroom pilot schools. This collaborative process includes the development of an organizing framework to articulate the characteristics of an arts-rich school. Design teams at each instructional level (high school, middle, elementary) will then use these characteristics to develop action plans that outline and prioritize strategies for a phased implementation of the arts-rich model. Initial planning work for the initiative is being funded by grants secured the Friends of the McCallum Fine Arts Academy and mindPOP.
